Yes, like the title says. Previewing an ittly link is now done. All you have to do is add an equal sign (=) to the end of your link and you will be told what the destination url is. I have also provided an iframe to view the site from this preview page, if you cant really tell what the site is from the destination url.

0 Preview Link

The next development of ittly, will be a preview function. I have some ideas how to implement this.

1. Like I’ve seen on another site, adding a dash (or some symbol) to the end of an ittly url link. This takes you to a page that shows you the original link of the site.

2. Depending on how practical and how easy to implement, taking a screenshot of the site that has an ittly link. My thoughts worry about the amount of space that will be added by all the images. One possibilty is to compress the images and make them available for download.

3. Is a combination of the above.

I’m fairly certain that number 1 will be implemented in the next few days. A basic version of number 2 will be built, and probably added as the site doesn’t have many links just now, but if the number increases the situation of the amount of images will have to be monitored. Possibly a time limit on how long we store a preview image.

*EDIT* – Use iframes will get around screenshot problem!

The site now has a button near the top navigation buttons that will add a bookmark to ittly.com to your browsers bookmarks.

Also have created a bookmark that when placed onto your toolbar, if you click on the bookmark/favorite it will create an ittly link based on the site you are currently viewing. This will allow users to use this free service from any where on the web.

I’m about to investigate how to create a ittly link by using a bookmark in your browser. So the bookmark takes your current url and and creates an iitly link. Also going to have a button on the main site that will add ittly.com to your bookmarks.

Thanks to the user, even though he/she was a jackass, for showing me that currently if you create an ittly link, you can create another ittly link through your original ittly link. This will be removed in the next few hours.

** EDIT **

This is now done, if someone now tries to use an ittly link as the LONG url an error message is thrown.

Well this is now half completed, to use just now all you do is enter is add the address you wish to ittlfy to the end of the following url.

http://ittly.com/apiCreate.php?url=

So an example would be:

http://ittly.com/apiCreate.php?url=http://google.com

This would return an ittly link on the page. The way I’m think is that a user of the api reads in the result of the webpage to a variable in whatever language they are using. In the next week or so, when I get back to my flat and not working on my web book. I’m going to do some mock examples in java, python and possibly c++.

Probably the next major change that would result in a version change is the development of an api for use in other applications.

The way thats coming to mind is to have a php script that sets a variable using GET. The user submits a site by say a url like, ‘http://ittly.com/api.php?site=http://userssite.com’. But how to return the result is causing more of a problem. All I can think of just now is to return the ittly link as text in a page. But struggle to think how to get it back to the user.

There seems to be some sort of a problem with my favicon after uploading it twice to the site. Needs some investigation there. Other than these two things, which come to mind just now, Im sure theres other stuff, Im just going to concentrate on getting the site SEO.
